Mine did, for a long time. Pretty sure I found not only the issue, but also the fix for it! Some of the issues we were seeing were really weird, and all seemed like a buggy app! This may also work for TV’s, Roku’s, Firestick’s, etc I really don’t know as we only own AppleTV devices.
- VERY slow to respond to button presses, as in 10-30+ seconds.
- Not recognizing that the “back” button was pushed to exit live tv, the guide, episode list, etc.
- Finally exiting after many button pushes and lots of waiting, only to get to the AppleTV home screen with the audio still playing. Sometimes it would end on its own after a minute or so and other times you had to fully reboot the AppleTV before it would stop.
- Logging you out of the app every. single. day. which really sucked!! (This may not be related but I wanted to mention it.)
I run PiHole in my house to block ads at the network level for pc’s and phones. No, it doesn’t block ads in YouTube or streaming apps, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, it does however make for a MUCH better, safer browsing experience that is faster and more privacy focused. I often wondered if the Hulu issues could be Hulu using some sketchy servers or content delivery networks that were getting blocked by mi PiHole’s. I changed the DNS to my ISP’s and it never fixed anything so I left it set to my PiHole’s. (Yes, I run more than one for redundancy!)
After doing a few hours of reading and scouring the web for answers, I didn’t find much. I didn’t see any other posts or articles about PiHole and Hulu Live having any issues. I decided what the heck, I’m going to try a different DNS server like Google. No different, and I wasn’t going to leave it at Google anyway since they get enough of my personal data. I tried Quad9’s DNS (9.9.9.9.) and set it manually, and it seemed to be better. I liked better but I wanted it fixed, so I also tried Cloudflare’s DNS. That did the trick! The app was very responsive to button presses, changing screens, going back from live tv of the guide. Its only been a short time but so far it seems to have fixed the issue and I’m happy!
To change the DNS settings on your AppleTV, use the following steps!
Go into settings, scroll down and enter the “System” menu.
Scroll down and enter the “Network” menu.
Enter the “Ethernet” or “Wireless” menu for what ever connection method you use.
Click “Configure DNS” so it changes to manual.

Set the ip address by scrolling sideways as well as up and down to 1.1.1.1 so it matches the screen below.
As for getting logged out everyday…
In the end I think there was an issue with my account for the logout problem. I called Hulu Support (and someone answered!) he was super helpful and worked through the issue with me. They requested that I reset my password (he sent me the link) and that my account had recently “migrated”, whatever that meant, and this should fix it. That did seem to fix the issue with the logging out.
Now, time will only tell if both issues have disappeared! Hopefully this will also help you if you are the same or similar issues with your Hulu Live Subscription.
