Syma x5sw Flight – Hand Launch and Retrieve

First off… a warning.  I’m about to rant… there, I warned you!

I’m really sick of the wind!  Any day over 40*F lately has had 8+ mph wind.  Or worse… the other day it was a steady 8 mph and was gusting to over 20, hence you see why I haven’t flown much lately. March came in like a lion, so it was supposed to go out like a lamb. Instead it went out like an asshole and that has continued into April.  #ThisSucks

Now, my little Syma x5sw doesn’t weigh much and gets tossed around a lot in the wind.  If you’ve watched some of my prior video’s then you have seen where at times I make little to no forward progress even though I am full right stick forward!  The only way to make “forward” progress into the wind sometimes is to chop the throttle to about 15%-20% while keeping the right stick all the way forward.  Basically you trade altitude for forward progress as the quad will “glide” forward as it drops.  When you get close to the ground you give it full left stick again and climb.  You basically climb and glide in repetition to get the quad where you want it to go. The wind bug certainly affects this little quad as well.  The Wind Bug has been documented by others (here, here and here) so I won’t get into the details.  Basically some people claim you can swap the flight controller and fix it and others tape pennies to the front of the quad.  I’ve done neither as this is my “trainer” when it comes to quads and I want to learn to fly it on my own without help.  As I progress and buy new a quad I’d love to have some of the stabilization and hovering help.  But at this point my flights are 100% manual with no assistance.  This way I feel that I’m getting a better base skill set and not relying on the quad to take care of some of the flying for me.

So in short, I apologize for the jerkiness in the some of the videos… I can’t wait for the wind to die, I have to fly so I deal with the wind!  🙂

Flew for the first time in almost a month, wind totally sucked and I shouldn’t have been flying in it but I really wanted to fly! You can see in the video at one point I reach up and grab it out of the air, and at another point I hand launched it.
