Apple is working on new desktop Macs, including a ground-up redesign of the tiny-but-controversial 2013 Mac Pro. We’re also due for some new iMacs, which Apple says will include some features that will make less-demanding pro users happy.
But we don’t know when they’re coming, and the Mac Pro in particular is going to take at least a year to get here. Apple’s reassurances are nice, but it’s a small comfort to anyone who wants high-end processing power in a Mac right now. Apple hasn’t put out a new desktop since it refreshed the iMacs in October of 2015, and the older, slower components in these computers keeps Apple out of new high-end fields like VR.
As someone who has attempted to build a “hackintosh” on a number of occasions and only succeeded once… I totally get it. You have to have a very technical background and be willing to mess with and edit files that could easily cripple the install to the point of never booting again. While there are those of us out there that still prefer to work on a desktop over a laptop, I know many that do prefer the laptop. However Apple shouldn’t continue to ignore its core users. Not to mention they need to really update their laptops every year like every other major hardware vendor. They still list a MBP as “new” that originally shipped in mid 2015…. shameful!
The people that purchase Mac Pro’s (and no, the abomination that is the Mac Mini doesn’t count as a Mac Pro) were “Mac” people long before the iphone and ipad craze today. And even further back than before it was cool to have a Macbook Pro. Now it seems everyone uses a Mac Book Pro if they are cool. Yup… it’s now a status symbol.
Just to mess with people at work I ask them what the first piece of software they installed on their shiny Mac was? 2 out of 3 times the answer is “Windows”…. point made. 🙄
