REVIEW: Hoover Power Drive Swivel XL Pet

We’ve had a Dyson for a number of years now and it seems in the last year I’m constantly cleaning filters, passages, etc to keep good suction on it.  For what is a very expensive vacuum I feel that it should be working better than it is.

This is there the Hoover Power Drive Swivel XL Pet vacuum comes in.  We have a bird and he doesn’t shed like a cat or a dog, but I can tell you this vacuum rocks!  I vacuumed the entire house with the Dyson and got about what I expected dirt wise in the canister.  After emptying the canister and putting it away I pulled the new Hoover out of the box.  I proceeded to vacuum the entire house again… and wouldn’t you know I had about the same amount of dirt and dust in the collection bin as I did with the Dyson.  So AFTER using the Dyson this Hoover got just as much crap out of my carpets!

After waiting another week I skipped the Dyson and went straight to the Hoover.  After vacuuming the entire house I got half again more than I did last week with it.  This tells me it has superior suction to the Dyson and you can clearly see that it pick up more than the aging Dyson!  Yes this is a NEW vacuum compared to a 6 year old Dyson so it should be better, however I was not expecting it to be this much better!

The Good

  • GREAT suction power!
  • I haven’t had to clean the beater brush yet, doesn’t seem to hold hair and instead gets it into the dust bin.
  • Seems light weight while still being built well.

The Bad

  • Heavier than the Dyson, makes it harder to push around and doesn’t seem to “corner” as well as the Dyson does.
  • Slightly quieter than the Dyson, perhaps this is because its much newer and technology gets better?
  • No pedal to “release” the handle from upright, you have to hold the front of the vacuum with your foot and pull the handle back. That’s my biggest gripe on this machines!

If I had to do it all over again, I’d still go with the Hoover Power Drive Swivel XL Pet over another vacuum!
